Winding Down: Your Pre-Period Phase

  • 2 min read

After ovulation, you enter the ‘Winding Down’ phase (usually days 17-28). This phase has two parts – first calm and relaxed, then the pre-period shift. Here’s what to expect.

What’s Happening Inside
Progesterone rises after ovulation – this hormone makes you feel calmer and sometimes sleepier. In the last few days before your period, both progesterone and estrogen drop quickly. This hormone shift is why you might notice changes in how you feel.
Early Winding Down (Days 17-23ish)
Calm, relaxed feeling. Sometimes more sleepy or low-key. Slight bloating or breast tenderness might start. Lower energy than mid-cycle but not uncomfortable.
Late Winding Down / Pre-Period (Days 24-28+)
Mood swings or extra sensitivity – things might bother you more. Cravings for certain foods (hello, chocolate!). Tiredness or lower energy. Feeling more introverted or needing alone time. This is what people often call ‘PMS’.
What Helps During This Phase

What to know

  • Be extra kind to yourself – this is not the time for harsh self-criticism
  • Honor cravings in balance – your body might genuinely need more fuel
  • More rest and sleep if you need it
  • Cozy, calming activities
  • Give yourself permission to say no to things
  • Prepare for your period – have supplies ready!

Good To Know
If you feel grumpy or sensitive before your period, you’re not ‘being dramatic’ – your hormones are literally shifting! Understanding this can help you be gentler with yourself. Track your patterns so you can plan ahead.
