A slight metallic or musky smell during your period is completely normal – it’s just blood mixed with bacteria and vaginal fluids. This natural smell shouldn’t be strong or unpleasant. The smell gets stronger if blood sits in a pad or tampon for too long, which is why regular changing is important. Good hygiene – changing products regularly and washing normally – keeps any smell minimal. A very strong or bad smell could signal an infection and should be checked by a doctor.
What can help:
What to know
- Change pads/tampons regularly (every 4-6 hours)
- Shower or bathe as usual during your period
- Wear cotton underwear that breathes
- Avoid scented products which can cause irritation
A mild smell is normal – strong odors mean it’s time to change your product!
