Why do I smell even after I shower?

  • 2 min read

Puberty changes how your body produces sweat and oils, here’s why you might smell more and what helps.

Hormones Change Your Sweat
During puberty, your sweat glands become more active and produce a different type of sweat. This new sweat has more proteins and fats that bacteria break down, causing odor.
It’s Not About Being Dirty
You can shower perfectly and still develop odor quickly. This is biochemistry, not cleanliness. Your body is producing different substances now.
Bacteria Cause the Smell
The odor comes from bacteria on your skin breaking down sweat. The bacteria are normal and healthy, they just produce smell as a byproduct.
Deodorant Actually Helps
Deodorant (or antiperspirant) reduces bacteria or sweat production. Using it after showering is effective and normal for teenagers.
Some Areas Smell More
Armpits, groin, and feet have more sweat glands and bacteria. Focusing hygiene on these areas helps most.
Diet Can Affect Smell
Strong-smelling foods (garlic, onions, spices) can come through in sweat. This is normal, what you eat affects body chemistry.
Change Clothes Regularly
Wearing the same clothes allows bacteria to build up. Clean clothes daily, especially underwear and socks, makes a big difference.
It’s Not Just You
Almost every teenager deals with increased body odor. It’s a universal puberty experience, you’re not unique or dirty.
