Why do I grow so much one year and not at all the next?

  • 2 min read

Growth doesn’t happen at a steady pace, your body grows in spurts, with fast periods followed by slower ones.

Growth Spurts Are Normal
During puberty, you might grow 7-12 cm in one year, then barely grow at all the next. This is your body’s natural rhythm.
Your Body Needs Recovery Time
Growing takes enormous energy. After a big growth spurt, your body needs time to catch up, strengthening bones, building muscle, adjusting organs.
Hormones Drive the Pattern
Growth hormone levels fluctuate. When they’re high, you grow fast. When they stabilize, growth slows down. This is completely normal.
Different Parts Grow at Different Times
Your hands and feet might grow first, then your arms and legs, then your torso. This staggered pattern can make growth seem uneven.
You’re Still Growing
Even when you’re not getting taller, your body is still developing, your bones are strengthening, your organs are maturing, your shape is changing.
Growth Plates Close Eventually
Your bones have growth plates that allow them to lengthen. These close at different ages (usually late teens/early 20s), ending height growth.
Nutrition and Sleep Matter
You grow most while sleeping, and your body needs proper nutrition to fuel growth. Inconsistent growth might reflect sleep or eating patterns.
