Why do I get headaches at school?

  • 2 min read

School-related headaches are common and usually come from environmental factors, stress, or physical strain, here’s how to identify and prevent them.

Eye Strain Is a Major Cause
Staring at boards, screens, or books for hours strains your eyes. If you need glasses or your prescription is wrong, this creates tension headaches.
Dehydration Is Common at School
Many students don’t drink enough water during the school day. Even mild dehydration causes headaches. Bring a water bottle and sip throughout the day.
Skipping Meals Lowers Blood Sugar
Missing breakfast or lunch drops your blood sugar, which triggers headaches. Eating regular meals and snacks prevents this.
Stress and Tension
Tests, social situations, deadlines, school stress creates physical tension in your neck, shoulders, and jaw. This muscle tension causes headaches.
Poor Posture at Desks
Hunching over desks, craning your neck to see boards, or holding your head at weird angles creates neck and shoulder tension that leads to headaches.
Fluorescent Lights and Noise
Bright fluorescent lighting and constant noise can trigger headaches, especially if you’re sensitive to sensory input. Some classrooms are just headache-inducing environments.
What Helps
Drink water regularly, eat consistent meals, take breaks to rest your eyes, practice good posture, and manage stress. If you need glasses, get them.
When to Check In
If headaches are frequent, severe, come with vision changes, or interfere with learning, see a doctor. Chronic headaches might need treatment or accommodations.
