Period cramps happen because your uterus tightens and relaxes to help push out its lining. These muscle contractions are normal, just like when other muscles in your body work hard. Some people have mild cramps, others have stronger ones – both are normal experiences. Cramps usually feel like aching or throbbing in your lower belly, and they’re most common on the first few days of your period.
What can help:
What to know
- Use a heating pad or hot water bottle on your lower abdomen
- Take a warm bath or gentle walk
- Try over-the-counter pain relievers (ask a parent first)
- Rest and relax when you need to
If your cramps are really severe or keep you from normal activities, talk to a healthcare provider.
