What should I do if someone shares my photo without permission?

  • 2 min read

Having your photo shared without permission feels violating and scary. Here’s how to take back control.

Ask Them to Remove It Immediately
Message the person who posted it: “Please take down that photo, I didn’t give you permission to share it.” Be firm and direct.
Report to the Platform
If they refuse, report the post to the social media platform. Most sites have policies against sharing someone’s image without consent, especially for minors.
Tell a Trusted Adult
This is serious. Talk to a parent, guardian, teacher, or school counselor who can help you navigate the situation and escalate if needed.
Document Everything
Take screenshots showing the post, when it was shared, and any responses. This evidence is important if you need to involve authorities or the school.
Know Your Rights
In many places, sharing someone’s photo without permission, especially if it’s embarrassing, private, or inappropriate, can have legal consequences. An adult can help you understand your options.
Set Boundaries with Friends
Have a conversation with friends about consent: “Please ask before posting photos of me. I need to approve what goes online.” Real friends will respect this.
Be Careful What You Share
Once you send a photo to someone, you can’t control what they do with it. Only share photos you’d be okay with others seeing, and only with people you deeply trust.
It’s Not Your Fault
If someone shares an embarrassing or private photo of you, that’s their choice and their responsibility, not yours. You deserve privacy and respect.
