Good to know
Getting messages from strangers online can feel exciting, but it’s important to stay safe. Here’s how to handle messages from people you don’t know.
Don’t Respond
Ignoring the message is the safest choice. Responding, even to say “no”, shows them your account is active and opens the door for more contact.
Don’t Click Links or Download Files
Strangers may send links or attachments that contain viruses, scams, or inappropriate content. Never click on anything from someone you don’t know.
Block Immediately
You don’t owe strangers your time or attention. Block them so they can’t contact you again.
Report Suspicious Accounts
If the message is inappropriate, threatening, or asks for personal information, report the account to the platform. This protects you and others.
Don’t Share Personal Information
Never give strangers your name, age, school, location, phone number, or photos, even if they seem friendly. Scammers and predators often act nice at first.
Tell a Trusted Adult
If a stranger’s message makes you uncomfortable, scared, or confused, tell a parent, guardian, or trusted adult. You’re not in trouble, you’re being smart.
Watch for Common Scams:
What to know
- “You won a prize! Click here to claim it” (phishing scam)
- “I’m a modeling scout, send me photos” (potential predator)
- “Can you help me? I need money/gift cards” (financial scam)
- “I’m a fan, let’s be friends” (could be anyone with any motive)
Trust Your Instincts
If something feels off, it probably is. Don’t second-guess your gut, block and move on.
