How should I care for my hair as it grows?

  • 2 min read

During puberty, your hair might change texture, thickness, or oiliness. Here’s how to care for it as your body develops.

Oil Production Changes
Puberty hormones affect your scalp’s oil glands. You might notice your hair gets greasy faster than it used to. This is completely normal.
Washing Frequency
How often you wash depends on your hair type. Some people need to wash daily, others every few days. Find what works for you, there’s no single right answer.
Choose the Right Products
Use shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type (oily, dry, curly, straight). If you’re unsure, ask a parent or hair stylist for recommendations.
Be Gentle
Don’t scrub your scalp roughly or brush wet hair aggressively, it can cause breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair and be patient with tangles.
Texture Changes
Your hair might become curlier, straighter, thicker, or thinner during puberty. This is your body finding its adult hair texture.
Heat and Chemicals
If you use heat styling tools or hair dye, use heat protectant and give your hair breaks. Healthy hair starts with healthy care.
Scalp Health
A healthy scalp grows healthy hair. If you notice persistent dandruff, itching, or other concerns, talk to a parent about seeing a doctor.
