How do I wake up easier for school?

  • 2 min read

Waking up for school is tough for teens, your biology works against early mornings, but these strategies help.

Teen Brains Want to Sleep Late
During puberty, your circadian rhythm shifts later. You naturally want to fall asleep around 11pm and wake around 8-9am. Early school start times fight your biology.
You Need Consistent Sleep Schedule
Going to bed and waking at the same time every day (yes, even weekends) helps regulate your internal clock. Irregular schedules make mornings harder.
Get Actual Sunlight in the Morning
Open curtains, go outside, or sit by a window. Morning sunlight signals your brain to wake up and helps regulate your sleep cycle for the next night.
Don’t Snooze Repeatedly
The sleep you get after hitting snooze is low-quality and makes you groggier. Set your alarm for the last possible minute and get up when it rings.
Prepare the Night Before
Pack your bag, choose clothes, prepare breakfast items. Reducing morning decisions and tasks makes mornings less overwhelming.
Move Your Body
Light stretching, a quick walk, or even just sitting up and moving helps blood flow and wakes your brain. Staying still keeps you drowsy.
Avoid Screens Right Before Bed
Blue light from phones suppresses melatonin and makes it harder to fall asleep. This makes morning waking even harder. Put screens away 30-60 minutes before bed.
The Real Solution Is More Sleep
If mornings are brutal, you’re probably not getting enough sleep. Calculate backward from wake time, if you need to be up at 7am, be asleep by 10pm for 9 hours.
