How do I protect my privacy online?

  • 2 min read

Your privacy online is your right. Here’s how to protect your personal information and control what others see.

Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Create passwords with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Never reuse the same password across sites, if one gets hacked, they all become vulnerable. Consider using a password manager.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
This adds an extra security step (like a code sent to your phone) so even if someone gets your password, they can’t access your account.
Review Privacy Settings Regularly
Social media platforms update their settings often. Check who can see your posts, your profile, and your location. Make your accounts private if you want control over who follows you.
Turn Off Location Sharing
Apps and photos can reveal where you are in real time. Disable location services for social media unless absolutely necessary, and never share your live location publicly.
Be Careful What You Share
Don’t post your phone number, address, school name, birthday (especially year), or other identifying details. Scammers and strangers use this info for harm.
Limit Third-Party App Access
Many apps and games ask to access your social media. Only grant access if you trust the app and understand why it needs your data. Revoke access from old apps you no longer use.
Google Yourself
Search your name and username to see what information about you is publicly available. If you find something concerning, work with an adult to get it removed.
Trust Your Gut
If a request for information feels weird or invasive, say no. You don’t owe anyone your personal details.
