How do I handle online bullying or mean comments?

  • 2 min read

Online bullying hurts just as much as in-person bullying, sometimes more because it feels inescapable. Here’s how to protect yourself.

Don’t Respond or Retaliate
Bullies want a reaction. Responding often makes things worse. Don’t engage, block and report instead.
Save Evidence
Take screenshots of mean messages, posts, or comments before blocking. This evidence helps if you need to report to an adult or the platform.
Block the Bully
You have the power to remove them from your online space. Block them on all platforms and don’t feel guilty, you deserve peace.
Report to the Platform
Most social media sites have reporting tools for harassment and bullying. Use them, reporting helps protect others too.
Tell a Trusted Adult
Talk to a parent, teacher, school counselor, or another trusted adult. Online bullying is serious, and you shouldn’t handle it alone.
Don’t Blame Yourself
Bullying is never your fault. The problem is the bully’s behavior, not you. Their words don’t define your worth.
Take Breaks from Social Media
If online spaces are stressing you out, it’s okay to step away. Delete apps temporarily, mute notifications, or take a full break to protect your mental health.
Surround Yourself with Kindness
Spend time with supportive friends and family who remind you of your value. Real-life connections often feel more genuine than online interactions.
