Knowing how to block and report people online is an essential safety skill. Here’s how to do it effectively.
Why Blocking and Reporting Matters
Blocking stops someone from contacting you or seeing your content. Reporting alerts the platform to harmful behavior so they can take action and protect others too.
How to Block Someone:
- Go to their profile or message
- Look for the “Block” or “three dots” menu (usually top right corner)
- Select “Block” and confirm
- They won’t be able to message, tag, or see your posts anymore
What Happens When You Block Someone?
What to know
- They can’t see your profile, posts, or stories
- They can’t message or tag you
- They usually won’t be notified that you blocked them
- You won’t see their content either
How to Report Someone:
- Find the “Report” option in their profile or on the specific post/message
- Choose the reason: harassment, inappropriate content, spam, impersonation, etc.
- Provide details if asked, the more specific, the better
- Submit the report. The platform will review it.
When to Report:
- Harassment, threats, or bullying
- Inappropriate sexual content or requests
- Hate speech or discrimination
- Scams or impersonation
- Sharing your photos or info without consent
- Anything that makes you feel unsafe
Take Screenshots First
Before blocking or reporting, take screenshots of harmful messages or posts. This evidence can be useful if you need to involve adults, school, or authorities.
Tell a Trusted Adult
Blocking and reporting are good steps, but if someone is threatening you, harassing you, or making you feel unsafe, tell a parent, teacher, or trusted adult immediately.
You’re Not Overreacting
If something online makes you uncomfortable, you have every right to block and report. Trust your instincts, your safety matters more than worrying about being “nice.”
