Good to know
Good note-taking helps you learn and remember information. Here are strategies that work.
Don’t Write Everything
You can’t copy every word the teacher says. Focus on main ideas, key terms, and examples. Your notes should make sense when you review them later.
Use Your Own Words
Translating information into your own language helps you understand and remember it better than copying word-for-word.
Develop a System
Bullet points, headings, arrows, and highlighting can organize your thoughts. Find what works for you and stick with it.
Listen First, Write Second
Try to understand what’s being said before writing it down. If you’re frantically scribbling, you’re not processing the information.
Ask Questions in Your Notes
Write down things you don’t understand with a question mark. This reminds you what to review or ask about later.
Review Soon After Class
Look over your notes within 24 hours while the lesson is still fresh. Fill in gaps and clarify confusing parts.
Digital or Paper?
Some people focus better with pen and paper, others prefer typing. Experiment to find what helps YOU learn best.
Don’t Panic If You Miss Something
You can ask the teacher, check with a classmate, or review the textbook. Missing one point doesn’t ruin everything.
