How can I take a short break at school when I feel stressed?

  • 2 min read

When stress builds up during the school day, short breaks can help you reset and refocus.

Ask to Use the Bathroom
This is the most accessible break. Splash water on your face, do some deep breathing, and give yourself a minute of quiet.
Go Outside If Possible
Fresh air and a change of scenery, even for five minutes, can dramatically shift your mood. Walk around, look at the sky, breathe.
Find a Quiet Corner
Library, empty hallway, or quiet stairwell, find a spot where you can be alone for a few minutes to reset.
Do Quick Grounding Exercises
Name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste. This brings you back to the present.
Stretch or Move
Roll your shoulders, stretch your arms, shake out tension. Physical movement releases stress hormones.
Talk to a Trusted Adult
School counselor, nurse, or a teacher you trust can provide support or give you permission for a longer break if needed.
Use Lunch or Free Periods
Protect this time for actual rest, not just socializing or homework. Give yourself permission to decompress.
Know Your Rights
If you’re genuinely overwhelmed, you can ask to see the counselor or nurse. Your wellbeing matters more than one class period.
