When your daughter cries and you do not know what to say: a guide for dads

Sibling conflict is one of the most common family challenges, here’s why it happens and how to make it better.

Sharing Space and Resources
You’re competing for the same things: parents’ attention, use of devices, space in the house. That competition creates friction.
Personalities Clash
Sometimes siblings just have clashing personalities. You’re different people forced to live together, conflict is natural.
Jealousy and Comparison
Parents might treat siblings differently (real or perceived), leading to jealousy: “They get away with everything!” Comparison breeds resentment.
They Know How to Push Your Buttons
Siblings know exactly what annoys you because they’ve lived with you forever. Sometimes they push buttons just because they can.
You’re Both Growing and Changing
As you both go through puberty and adolescence, everyone’s moody, sensitive, and figuring themselves out. That makes conflict more likely.
It’s Normal
Most siblings fight. It doesn’t mean you don’t love each other, it means you’re two different people learning to share space and resources.
How to Fight Less
Set boundaries: “Please don’t take my stuff without asking.” Talk it out when calm, not mid-fight. Spend time apart when needed. Apologize when you’re wrong.
It Usually Gets Better
Many siblings who fight constantly as kids become close as adults. You’re learning to navigate relationships, it’s messy but temporary.
