When your daughter cries and you do not know what to say: a guide for dads

Feeling like the odd one out in your own family is more common than you think, and it doesn’t mean something’s wrong with you.

Different Personalities
Families are made of different people with different personalities, interests, and ways of seeing the world. Being different doesn’t mean you don’t belong.
Growing and Changing
As you get older, you develop your own opinions, tastes, and identity. It’s natural to feel different from your family as you discover who you are.
Different Interests
Maybe your family loves sports and you love art. Maybe they’re outgoing and you’re quiet. Different interests don’t mean you love each other less.
It’s Part of Growing Up
Teenagers naturally start to see themselves as individuals separate from their family. This differentiation is healthy and normal.
You Can Still Connect
Being different doesn’t mean you can’t be close. Find common ground where you can, and respect differences where you can’t.
Celebrate What Makes You Unique
Your differences make you who you are. Being like everyone else isn’t the goal, being authentically yourself is.
Find Your People
Outside of family, find friends and communities who share your interests and values. You can love your family AND have connections elsewhere.
It’s Okay to Feel Lonely Sometimes
Feeling different can be isolating. That feeling is valid. Talk to friends, a counsellor, or find online communities where you feel understood.
