What should I do if my parents don’t listen?

When your daughter cries and you do not know what to say: a guide for dads

It’s incredibly frustrating when you try to talk and feel like your parents aren’t really hearing you. Here’s what to do.

Make Sure You Have Their Attention
Sometimes parents are distracted by phones, TV, or their own thoughts. Ask: “Can we talk for a few minutes?” and wait until they’re actually focused.
Try a Different Time
If they’re busy, stressed, or tired, they can’t listen well. Come back when things are calmer: “Can we talk about this later when you have time?”
Be Clear and Specific
Instead of “You never listen,” try: “When I tried to tell you about X, I felt unheard. Can I try again?” Specific examples help them understand.
Write It Down
If verbal conversations aren’t working, try a letter or note. Sometimes seeing words on paper lands differently than hearing them spoken.
Stay Calm
Getting emotional or yelling (even though it’s tempting!) usually makes them focus on your tone instead of your message. Deep breaths help.
Ask Them to Repeat Back
Try: “Can you tell me what you heard?” This ensures they actually understood what you were trying to say.
Bring in a Mediator
If you’re really stuck, ask another family member to help you talk to your parents. Sometimes a third person helps everyone communicate better.
It’s Not Giving Up to Get Outside Help
If your parents consistently won’t listen about something important, talk to a school counsellor or trusted adult. You deserve to be heard.
