Not everyone feels safe opening up to family, and that’s okay, there are other ways to get support.
Your Feelings Are Valid
If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your family about certain things (or anything), that’s okay. You’re not a bad person for having boundaries.
It Might Be About the Topic
Maybe you talk to family about some things but not others. Certain topics (periods, mental health, relationships) might feel too personal, and that’s okay.
Past Experiences Matter
If you’ve opened up before and been judged, dismissed, or hurt, it makes sense you’d be hesitant to try again. Trust has to be earned.
Different Relationships Work Differently
Some families are close and talk about everything. Some aren’t. Neither is right or wrong, they’re just different ways of relating.
Find Other Trusted Adults
School counsellors, teachers, aunts, friend’s parents, coaches, these people can offer support, advice, and someone to talk to.
Friends Can Help Too
While friends aren’t a replacement for adult guidance, they can offer understanding, companionship, and someone who gets it.
Therapy or Counselling
A counsellor provides a safe, confidential space to talk about anything. You don’t need your family’s permission to talk to a school counsellor.
It Might Change
Relationships evolve. Just because you don’t feel comfortable now doesn’t mean you never will. But it’s also okay if it stays this way.
