Feeling judged by your own family can hurt deeply. Whether it’s about your choices, appearance, or feelings, here’s how to handle it.
Name the Feeling
Sometimes what feels like judgment is actually concern or misunderstanding. Try to identify: Are they truly criticizing you, or are they worried and expressing it badly?
Talk About It
If it’s safe, tell them how their words affect you. You could say: “When you said X, it felt like you were judging me. It hurt my feelings.”
Set Boundaries
You can say things like: “I need you to stop commenting on my weight/clothes/friends” or “Please don’t say things like that.” You’re allowed to ask for respect.
Remember: It’s About Them, Not You
Often when people judge, it’s because of their own insecurities, upbringing, or beliefs, not because there’s actually something wrong with you.
Don’t Internalize It
Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true. You know yourself better than anyone else. Their judgment doesn’t define you.
Find Supportive People
Spend time with family members or friends who accept you as you are. Positive relationships remind you that you’re worthy exactly as you are.
Seek Outside Support
If judgment at home is constant and hurtful, talk to a school counsellor or trusted adult. They can help you develop coping strategies and see your worth.
Keep Being Yourself
Don’t shrink yourself to make others comfortable. Your authenticity matters more than their approval.
