Getting your first period is a big moment, and telling your mum might feel scary, but she’s been through this too and will want to support you!
Just Say It
The simplest way is often best: “Mum, I think I got my period.” You don’t need fancy words. She’ll understand right away and know what to do.
Show Instead of Tell
If speaking feels too hard, you could show her the stain on your underwear or write a quick note. Some girls text their mum if they’re at school. There’s no wrong way!
She’ll Probably Be Really Supportive
Your mum might get emotional (in a good way!) or give you a big hug. She might also jump into helpful mode and start getting supplies. Both reactions are normal!
Ask for What You Need
It’s okay to say: “Can you help me with pads?” or “I don’t know what to do.” Your mum will help you figure out products, how often to change them, and what to expect.
What If You Feel Embarrassed?
Totally normal! But remember, your mum has had periods for years. She won’t think it’s weird or gross. She’ll probably be proud that you came to her.
If Mum Isn’t Available
If you can’t talk to your mum, try another trusted woman like an aunt, older sister, grandma, or school nurse. They can help you get supplies and answer questions.
