Embarrassment can make simple conversations feel impossible, but you can get through it!
Acknowledge the Awkwardness
Start by saying: “This is really embarrassing for me, but I need to ask…” or “I feel awkward bringing this up…” Naming it makes it less powerful.
You Don’t Need Eye Contact
If looking at them feels too intense, talk during a car ride, while washing dishes together, or facing the same direction. Side-by-side conversations can feel easier.
Write It Down
A note, text, or letter can say what feels too embarrassing to speak. Hand it to them and let them read it. They’ll respond kindly and you’ll have started the conversation.
Remember: They’ve Been There
Your parents were teenagers once. They’ve felt embarrassed too. Whatever you’re dealing with, they’ve probably experienced something similar.
Keep It Short
You don’t have to explain everything perfectly. A simple “I need help with…” or “Can we talk about…” is enough to start.
They Want to Help
Your parents won’t laugh at you or think less of you. They’ll be glad you came to them instead of struggling alone or getting info from unreliable sources.
It Gets Easier
The first time is always the hardest. Once you’ve had one embarrassing conversation, the next one won’t feel as scary.
