How do I talk to my parents about periods?

  • 2 min read

Good to know

Talking about periods with your parents can feel awkward, but remember, they want to help you! Most parents are glad you came to them, even if the conversation feels a bit uncomfortable at first.

Start Simple
You don’t need a big speech. Try something like: “Can we talk about periods?” or “I have some questions about my body.” You can also leave a note if talking feels too hard.
Choose the Right Moment
Pick a quiet time when they’re not busy or stressed. Maybe during a car ride or while making dinner together. Avoid bringing it up during family arguments or rushed mornings.
It’s Okay to Be Nervous
If you feel embarrassed, that’s totally normal! You can even say, “This is awkward for me, but I need to ask…” Most parents understand and will try to make it easier.
Bring Resources
Sometimes it helps to have a book, article, or website to show them. You could say, “I read this and it made me wonder…” It gives you both something to look at together.
Remember: They Were Your Age Once
Your parents went through puberty too (even dads understand more than you’d think!). They might feel awkward too, but they care about making sure you have what you need.

If talking to parents feels impossible, try another trusted adult like an older sibling, aunt, school nurse, or counsellor.
