How do I talk to a parent who works a lot?

  • 2 min read

When a parent is always working, it can feel like you never get quality time together, but there are ways to connect.

Understand It’s Not About You
Parents work for many reasons: bills, career, providing for the family. It’s not because they don’t want to spend time with you, it’s often because they’re trying to take care of you in other ways.
Ask for Specific Time
Instead of waiting for them to initiate, ask directly: “Can we have dinner together Sunday?” or “Can we watch a movie Friday night?” Specific requests are easier to plan for.
Make the Most of Small Moments
If they can’t do long activities, value short ones: breakfast together, car rides, a quick chat before bed. Quality matters more than quantity.
Text or Call During the Day
A quick “thinking of you” text or short call during their lunch break keeps connection alive even when schedules are packed.
Express Your Feelings
Tell them calmly: “I miss spending time with you. Can we find time to hang out?” They might not realize you need more connection.
Schedule Regular Time
Ask if you can have a regular thing: “Can we always have Sunday breakfast together?” Routine makes it easier to prioritize.
Accept Their Limits
Some parents genuinely can’t change their work schedule right now. It doesn’t mean they don’t care. Find connection where you can and accept what you can’t change.
Find Other Supportive Adults
If your parent truly can’t be available, lean on other family members, mentors, or trusted adults for connection and support.
