How do I get my parents to take me seriously?

  • 2 min read

Feeling like your parents don’t take you seriously is frustrating, but there are ways to change how they see and hear you.

Stay Calm
Even if you’re upset, yelling or getting emotional makes them focus on your tone instead of your message. Take deep breaths and speak calmly.
Use Facts and Examples
Instead of “You never listen!” try: “When I tried to talk about X, you were on your phone.” Specific examples are harder to dismiss than general complaints.
Pick the Right Time
Don’t try to have serious conversations when they’re stressed, rushed, or distracted. Find a calm moment when they can actually focus on what you’re saying.
Show Maturity
Being responsible, following through on promises, and handling smaller things well proves you can handle bigger conversations. Actions build credibility.
Explain Why It Matters
Help them understand: “This is really important to me because…” When they see it matters, they’re more likely to listen seriously.
Ask Directly
You can say: “I need you to take this seriously” or “This really matters to me. Can you listen?” Sometimes naming what you need helps.
Be Consistent
If you’re serious about something, stay consistent. Changing your mind constantly makes it harder for them to know when something truly matters.
Accept That Some Things Take Time
If they’ve seen you as “just a kid” for years, shifting to taking you seriously happens gradually. Keep proving yourself and it will come.
