How do I deal with jealousy between siblings?

  • 2 min read

Feeling jealous of a sibling (or sensing their jealousy of you) is common, but it doesn’t have to poison your relationship.

Why Jealousy Happens
Siblings compare: grades, sports, looks, friends, how parents treat you. When one seems to get more (attention, praise, freedom), jealousy flares up.
It’s Not Really About You
If your sibling is jealous, it’s about their insecurities, not about you being “too much.” You don’t need to shrink yourself.
Talk About It
If you’re jealous, try: “I feel like you get more freedom than me, and it bothers me.” Naming it can open a conversation with parents or your sibling.
Avoid Rubbing It In
If you got something they wanted (praise, a good grade, a privilege), be graceful. You don’t need to brag or minimize their feelings.
Celebrate Each Other
Even when it’s hard, try to be happy for them when good things happen to them. They’ll (hopefully) do the same for you.
Ask Parents to Be Fair
If jealousy stems from real unfairness (they get away with more, you have stricter rules), talk to your parents calmly about it.
Remember: Life Isn’t a Competition
Your sibling’s success doesn’t take away from yours. There’s room for both of you to shine.
Focus on Your Own Path
Instead of comparing, focus on your own goals and growth. Their life is theirs; yours is yours.
