How do I ask my parents for help?

  • 2 min read

Asking for help can feel vulnerable, but your parents want to support you! Here’s how to ask effectively.

Be Specific About What You Need
Instead of “I need help,” say: “Can you help me understand this math problem?” or “I need help talking to my teacher.” Specific requests get better responses.
Pick the Right Time
Don’t ask when they’re rushing out the door or in the middle of something. Wait for a calm moment when they can actually focus on helping you.
Explain Why You Need Help
A little context helps: “I’ve tried this three times and I’m stuck” or “This is really stressing me out.” They’ll understand it’s genuinely important.
Be Open to Their Advice
Even if their suggestions aren’t perfect, listen respectfully. You can always decide what works best for you afterward.
It’s Not Weakness
Asking for help shows self-awareness and maturity. It means you know your limits and you’re smart enough to get support when you need it.
Say Thank You
When they do help, acknowledge it: “Thanks, that really helped” or “I appreciate you taking time for this.” This encourages them to keep being supportive.
What If They Can’t Help?
Sometimes parents don’t know how to help with something specific (like advanced homework). That’s okay! They can still help you find someone who can, like a tutor, teacher, or counsellor.
